Themed project – Summary

Our theme for this project was ‘Sustainability’ and I chose to follow down the route of environmentalism, because that has been a topic I had been very interested in when I was younger and have recently become deeply interested in it again.

At first I couldn’t decide on what I wanted to do for my final item. I had the idea of a story for the subject beforehand but I didn’t really have much confidence in myself to do it and that a part of me wanted to do more educational things. I made a tester piece of drawing for the educational side, whilst I did like it, I found I had more enthusiasm for the story as I had begun working on concepts and testers.

The first half of the project I worked mainly on building up concepts and doing research on the subject and making dummy books and trying to work out a story. I found this stages really helpful for the process, like sketching out the pages on little dummy books made it easier to visualise the pages and made it less daunting.

Then I started the process of making the pages, I decided to draw them using watercolour, because it’s something I’ve never done before and because I thought that I would most likely be able to finish them off quicker by doing them traditionally than digitally. Once they were done they needed a little bit of digital editing, as some effects would have only looked good when done digitally and there was a need to correct the scans. Initially was going to use the poster design for the cover, to save time but it didn’t really go well with the rest of the book and I decided I was going to make it again, I had left enough breathing space so I had enough time to do it, and I’m glad I did, because that led me on to get ideas for some of the final designs for the remaining illustrations.

Writing the blurb for the little book was a bit difficult to write and trying to make it interesting because I only have a basic idea of the plot. I posted the blurb online to get the feedback from some friends who are writers.

I really like how the overall final product, and I’m glad that I decided to stick with having printer paper for the main body of the work and kept the card for just the cover, it would have become too bulky otherwise. The colours of the printed item is really bright and came out well, the only problem I had was that there was a problem with the printing, everything were aligned properly on the computer but where all slightly off when they came out and they needed to be trimmed down so that there was as little white boarders as possible.

I really like the final product and the whole world building I put into it in the development, that I would really like to carry on with this project in the future.

Cover Progress – Themed project

I’ve nearly finished the main part of the themed project, I will be printing it on Monday ^^

I thought I’d show the progress images of making the cover:

cover process gif.gif

1.Initial ideal/brainstorming

2. sketch

3. Lining

4. Coloured

5. added background

6. Edited scan

7. Finished work.

I like this idea more than my first initial/draft cover. Had to do a bit of editing due to the scan.

Themed project progress

For my themed project I’m going to be doing a little story and here are the progress. All the pages have been sketched out and I’m going to start inking them soon, I’m not really looking forward to that, as my lines always end up shaky ^^; but I’m on top of things to it wont take me too long to finish all the pages, which is good. There are 9 pages at the moment, with two of them completely finished so I only have 7 left, but maybe I’ll be adding more to make the story work better if needs be. There is also the dummy book.

There will also be illustrations in the little book, I’m not sure how many yet, but two have been done already. I also need to decide on a title.

Drawing Prompts

Otherwise known as the nonsense I draw in my spare time :/

These are some prompts from the draw the squad meme

I’m just going to leave them here and not explain myself I want to draw more, please someone stop me

the characters all belong to me.

Drawing and Mark making – Summary

In this unit we did a lot of drawing and observational drawings, that aimed to push our drawing abilities.

We did large portraits of our class mates to get to know them in the beginning on large A2 piece of paper. This was a good warm up and introduction to the course because I am very fond of portrait drawings, but not so much at that scale or at trying to draw it that quickly or with a model that kept on fidgeting, but it turned out quite well, so that shows I can get used to it in time.

We had a day of drawing gestures, ranging from our own hands in various poses to acting out various scenarios, and then drawing them out largely. I didn’t find drawing the figures and gestures all that difficult, I struggled when it came to drawing them on a larger scale. I just have a preference for smaller more compact spaces, I think I can get more of the pose and feel to it down in faster time, and that the proportions won’t become long and out of proportion.

We were given a verity of different objects to draw and we were set times to draw them, trying to get as much details in the work as possible in a short amount of time, we were also told to draw an object blind, without looking at it or the paper and trying to guess what kind of thing it is just by feeling it. I thought they came out quite well. We were also given a small object and told to make some sketches and a illustration based on the object. I liked the work I produced and I think that the illustration idea I came up with could be developed further.

Value drawings were where we had to draw an image just using the value and shading it, and using no lines to show the shape of the objects.

For the location drawing we went to Farnham museum to draw the various objects, and that it was a lot of fun drawing the various exhibits. There were two explore, find and explore tasks, the first was to find interesting objects on a two hour walk around and then draw them, the second was just to draw things we saw around Farnham and there was a list of things that were suggestions to find. I found the second task more enjoy able, but both I found uncomfortable to do, and found quite stressful, but I like the drawings I drew in the end.

Still life we had more objects to draw, but this time we had more time to draw them and to draw them in great detail. I enjoyed drawing this exercise, although it was a bit difficult to draw because of the place they were placed and trying to get it right, because I had to stand up over them and that made things difficult

.The 10cm square drawing where okay, it could have gone better had I use a different medium, as using pencil at that scale is time consuming and made things difficult.

Drawing to music is something I do regularly myself and so found it fun, but it was too loud and it made me really uncomfortable to work in that situation.

We were given a task to create an editorial illustration to a piece of writing we were given, and treat the task as though it was for a real client, and these two at the top where my final designs. I prefer the one with the girl on it and I think it’s the better of the two I made but I think that the other one would be the one most likely be in the magazine as it was closest to the other illustrations. I really liked this task.

For the full size drawing, we were given a description to make a full size drawing based on the description. Drawing on a large scale has become slightly better, but I could still improve with it. I liked the end result but her arms where a bit off.

Editing the life drawings where difficult because there weren’t many I liked or thought were good enough to submit.

Overall I have really enjoyed the drawing and mark making unit.

Valentines Drawings

Valentine Owl.jpg

I  like Valentines day and all, I just don’t really do much for it, but I like drawing cute , sweet and coupley things so I should try and get some confidence in doing so ^^

The owl is a gift for myself XD

These are my sketches of an idea I had but didn’t have enough time to do them all, but I might finish them or do something similar for next year ^^

here is a link to one I did finish though ^^

I hope you all like it and I hope you all have a wonderful day, whether you celebrate it or not 🙂

Burning Up – Doctor Who

Burning up.jpg

I’ve wanted to do some Doctor who fan art for a very long time now, and I’ve always liked the glowy Doctor Who fan art I’ve seen around and I want to do more with my other favourite Doctors and maybe draw another David Tennant one because I would like to not cry as much as I did during this one DX

I got the idea for this with his quote to Rose on ‘Doomsday’ – “I’m burning up a sun just to say good bye.” and that the regeneration (“I don’t want to go”) process looks like they’re burning up and being consumed by the energy. (They’re the saddest scenes for me, them and anything to do with Wilf :tears:)  I really loved those earlier series 🙂

So yeah, I’m trying to do more fan art of the things, so I thought I’d start with my beloved “Doctor Who” for which there has been alarmingly little fan art from me ^^; just next time, something more happier 😀

Here are some warm up sketches I did in preparation to drawing
Tenny sketches.jpg
I used his face from here to go on, I know he doesn’t cry in this scene I did though, but he does in the beach scene in ‘Doomsday’ and they are kinda mash of the two scenes >.>; sorry

I really hope you guys all like it 🙂

Art belongs to me
Doctor Who belongs to the BBC

Narrative Images

Here are some of the completed frames from my storyboards for the “hundred year old man who climbed the window and disappeared”. I went with the following the title closely but with hints of what the rest of the book had to offer, I didn’t want to follow the book to much, so I didn’t look into it until I had done my first draft of the storyboards and then worked elements into it.

I like how they’ve turned out and how it progress from one shot to another but I could have added a bit more detail them.

Under Camera final work

Here are some stills from my contribution to the under camera finale:

I think our final animation was okay, the actual drawings are good but I don’t like the idea behind it, we relied to heavily on a video to work from and didn’t push ourselves. Initially our idea was to have out animation in four stages and four different dance styles, this could have gone well, one style for each member, as some weren’t that familiar with ballet and so didn’t want to do that, and that would have been okay, we were going to have them blend from one style to another, and we started to work on that idea but one of the group wouldn’t agree and they wouldn’t listen to what we had to say when we tried to explain things, so to spare any further disagreements and to start the work as this was taking up a lot of our time, it was decided to go with this idea.

Our group was Megan, Ciarán, Joe.
